September 2026 Print

Letter from the President

As summer gives way to fall, some of us are adjusting to new routines. If you’re like me and have kids, that means the start of a new school year. For others, it could be changing schedules, fall planning, budget discussions, conference season or year-end initiatives.

These transitions often require us to make dozens of decisions every day, many of which seem relatively small in the moment but can have a lasting impact.

That's one reason I appreciate PRSA using September to reinforce the importance of sound judgment and professional integrity through Ethics Month. Too often, ethics is viewed through the lens of organizational crises or front-page headlines. In reality, it appears in daily choices: How we present information, how transparent we are with stakeholders, how we use AI, how we counsel leaders and how we respond when competing priorities arise. Ethics Month serves as an opportunity to reinforce these principles and explore resources that support ethical communications practices throughout the year.

The good news is that these decisions don't require perfection. They require thoughtful consideration, self-awareness and a commitment to doing what's right.

As you settle into your fall routine, I encourage you to remember that ethics isn't reserved for major decisions or moments of crisis. It often appears in the small choices we make every day, all of which can influence far more than we realize.

Cheers!
Phillip Nicolino, APR
President
PRSA Iowa Board of Directors
